Why You Should Trek Putaleng with Tổ Ong
Putaleng is located in Hồ Thầu Commune, Tam Đường District, Lai Châu Province. In the Dao language, Putaleng or Pú Tả Lèng means “Tả Lèng mountain peak.” At 3,049m, this is the third-highest peak in Vietnam. Its impressive height shows that this mountain is for trekkers who love conquering challenges. To make the most of the journey, you should travel with a professional organizer. Below are the reasons why you should take a Putaleng tour with Tổ Ong.
1. The difficulty of Putaleng:
Putaleng is rated level 3 in difficulty, mainly because of its elevation. As part of the Hoàng Liên range, this mountain has many steep slopes. From the very first stage, you must overcome three long, high climbs. In addition, the trekking route is up to 34km long, and you need 3 days and 4 nights to complete it. Physical fitness is essential for finishing the trip. The forest route also has many turns, so you should not trek alone because it is very easy to get lost in the primary forest.

2. The charm of the primary forest:
Putaleng is completely covered by forest. The ancient forest here has a powerful pull for anyone who loves exploration and nature. Evergreen trees cover a large area. Their trunks do not grow straight upward, but twist and curve into many different shapes. Because of low temperatures and high humidity year-round, moss and lichen grow strongly. They cling to trees from root to crown. Even large boulders are covered entirely in fresh green. Putaleng also has a dense stream system. Winding beneath the thick canopy, the clear, cool water has the power to wash away fatigue.
In particular, March and April are when wild rhododendrons bloom in abundance. Putaleng is known as the capital of rhododendron flowers. The area has up to 30 rhododendron varieties, distinguished by color. Some have long pointed petals, some have rounded petals, and others resemble tiny bells. When the flowers bloom, they bring life to the entire mountain forest. Yellow and purple rhododendrons are the most common, with colors softened by the cold air and mist.

3. Tổ Ong has extensive trekking experience:
The Tổ Ong team is experienced and professional in trekking. Survival and first-aid skills are trained by specialists from Survival Skill Vietnam. Adventure sports skills are trained by mountaineering expert Phan Thanh Nhiên. Tổ Ong has also spent a long time trekking the peaks of Vietnam’s Northwest, such as Ky Quan San, Tả Liên Sơn, Nhìu Cồ San, and more. This knowledge and skill set help support your safety throughout the trip.
4. A well-designed trekking route:
Before organizing the Putaleng trek, Tổ Ong spent time surveying and building the most convenient and manageable route possible. Your Putaleng journey promises many interesting moments.
Day one: Hồ Thầu Village – 2,400m rest hut
On the first day, you warm up on a gentle trail. After that, the route follows a stream beneath the ancient forest canopy. The stream is large, and the flowing water sounds like cheerful music. When sunset arrives, you reach Hồ Thầu hut. The hut is quite spacious and can accommodate up to 50 people. It has insulating mats and cotton blankets, so you can rest more comfortably.

Day two: 2,400m rest hut – Putaleng Peak – 1,800m rest hut
The route to the summit takes only about two hours, but it is steeper and harder to walk. Trekkers mainly pass through bamboo forest. After a few hours, you reach the summit marker of Putaleng. This is a closed mountain, meaning the entire mountain is covered by forest, so there is no open sea-of-clouds view. However, from above, you can still admire the whole mountain through a veil of mist. Green seems to cover everything, from the forest below to the high sky above. After checking in at the summit, you begin descending toward Tả Lèng. The trail is easier at this point. Passing through ancient forest, stepping across bridges made from fallen tree trunks, and moving through the brilliant colors of maple leaves, you will be overwhelmed by nature’s beauty.
Day three: 1,800m rest hut – Tả Lèng Commune
The 1,800m rest hut is also a suitable place to watch sunset over the mountainside. The red glow marks the end of another day. The next morning, the trekking group wakes early to welcome sunrise and continues descending. Tả Lèng Commune is the final point of the Putaleng conquest.

5. Experience local culture with Tổ Ong:
Before saying goodbye, Tổ Ong will take you to Sapa for a Dao herbal bath, made with leaves believed locally to help cleanse the body, relieve cold symptoms, and relax tired muscles. After that, you can enjoy sturgeon hotpot. Because sturgeon live in streams and waterfalls, the meat is firm and naturally sweet. This is certainly a fitting dish for the chilly weather of the Northwest. In the evening, visit Sapa night market, known for delicate handicrafts and cultural performances rich in highland identity.
These are five reasons why you should conquer Vietnam’s third-highest mountain with Tổ Ong. September to May of the following year is the most suitable time. Putaleng is at a beautiful stage, so take the chance to trek with Tổ Ong.
