Ta Xua Trekking Itinerary: Vietnam’s 13th-Highest Mountain
In recent years, Ta Xua Mountain has become increasingly familiar to trekkers thanks to its wild and captivating beauty. Conquering Vietnam’s 13th-highest mountain has also become an endurance challenge favored by many young travelers. Let’s explore the Ta Xua trekking tour itinerary with Tổ Ong Adventure.
A brief introduction to Ta Xua
Where is Ta Xua?
Ta Xua is the name of a mountain that forms a natural boundary between Son La and Yen Bai. The summit belongs to Ban Cong commune, Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province. At 2,865m above sea level, it is Vietnam’s 13th-highest mountain. The best time to trek Ta Xua is from September to May of the following year, during the dry season when the scenery is especially beautiful.

Beautiful scenery in Ta Xua
A white sea of clouds
At nearly 3,000m, the mountain temperature is quite low and especially cold in winter. From November to February of the following year, ice and snow may appear. At the same time, low temperatures and high humidity create layers of clouds that stretch out like an ocean to the horizon. This is a scene you should not miss when trekking Ta Xua.

Mysterious old-growth forest
The mountain is also covered by ancient forests. Because of harsh weather conditions, the trees have grown into twisted, rugged shapes covered in moss. Mist makes the forest even more mysterious, drawing every step deeper into the landscape.

The legendary dinosaur spine
With a pointed summit and few large trees, the mountain offers a 180-degree panoramic view. The route to the summit is the challenge many trekkers want to test themselves on. It is a dinosaur-spine ridge with a narrow trail and many large rocks blocking the way. Walking along the ridge, you feel as if you are moving through the clouds and sky. The distance between people and the clear blue sky seems shorter than ever.

Duration and trekking distance
To trek Ta Xua, you need 2 days and 1 night of forest trails and mountain slopes over a total distance of 24km. On average, trekkers move for about 9 hours per day.
The route to the summit
Day 1: from the mountain foot to the rest hut
The mountain foot is in a small village with the same name: Ta Xua village. From here, the Ta Xua trekking journey officially begins.
The first destination is Dau Rua, a unique photo spot on the mountain. After about 4 hours of trekking, you arrive close to noon, so the group rests here, has lunch, and enjoys the majestic mountain views.

The next destination is the rest hut. Over the next 4 hours, the trekking group crosses grass hills, forests, and Vietnam’s longest dinosaur-spine ridge. The view changes constantly, stirring the heart of anyone who loves the feeling of conquest.
By late afternoon, the group reaches the rest hut. The hut is a simple wooden house, spacious enough for everyone to rest. Mattresses and blankets are prepared inside to welcome travelers from afar. Drop your luggage quickly and enjoy a festive evening in the mountains of Northwest Vietnam.
Day 2: summit push and descent
The second day’s route is longer than the first. The group needs to start at 4:00 a.m. to avoid missing the beautiful sunrise on the mountain. The whole landscape becomes clearer as the first rays of sunlight appear.

After 5 hours of moving, you reach the highest point of the mountain: Ta Xua Peak. Nothing compares to seeing the full beauty of Ta Xua’s nature spread out before your eyes. Make time to capture memorable moments here.
As the sun rises higher, the group returns to the rest hut in time for lunch. The nature journey gradually comes to an end. After a short rest, the group starts descending in the early afternoon, and after 4 hours you arrive back at the mountain foot. The descent is a little faster because most of the route goes downhill.
