Introduction to Ta Chi Nhu

Ta Chi Nhu is known as the 7th highest mountain among Vietnam’s top 10 peaks, with an elevation of 2,979m. It lies in the Pu Luong massif of the Hoang Lien Son range, within Tram Tau district, Yen Bai province.

The trekking terrain here is quite complex, with many steep slopes, high hillsides, and rocky, winding trails. That is why it is a dream mountain for many trekkers. Alongside the challenge of conquering yourself is a landscape almost too beautiful to believe: mysterious mountains, romantic clouds, and dreamlike flowers.

In the Thai ethnic language, Ta Chi Nhu is called Phu Song Sung, while the Hmong call it Chung Chua Nha.

Two things make this mountain famous. The first is its ocean of white clouds. The second is its sky-filling sea of purple Chi Pau flowers. Alongside them is the majestic beauty of overlapping mountain peaks. You may find cloud paradises elsewhere, but the fairytale-like Chi Pau flower fields, poetic as music, can only be found here.

The ideal time to trek Ta Chi Nhu and see Chi Pau flowers

Every flower has its own blooming season, from the first buds to its most beautiful full bloom. From late September to November, Chi Pau flowers cover the hillsides all the way to the summit.

The weather toward year-end is cold, and occasional rain can make the atmosphere even more romantic. If you trek Ta Chi Nhu during this season to admire the Chi Pau flower sea, prepare warm clothing carefully.

The origin and meaning of Chi Pau flowers – the “don’t know, don’t remember” flower

Chi Pau is actually a name used by the Hmong people living here. It means “don’t know” or “don’t understand,” as even they did not know what the flower was called, when it first appeared, or why such beautiful hills of flowers could bloom so high in the mountains. Later, people found that Chi Pau flowers are actually Swertia, also known as co Mat Rong or Dai Tu Duong Duoc, a type of herbal plant with large seeds.

When Chi Pau blooms, it forms clusters of tiny flowers. The blossoms are small and resemble lavender. But Chi Pau’s purple is not as deep as lavender; it carries a touch of pale white, giving it a gentle charm. In the somewhat harsh climate of the mountain summit, from late autumn, the flowers grow in bands, covering the ground and spreading as if they could reach the horizon.

Immersing yourself in Chi Pau flowers

The mountain, usually green with grasses and plants, is suddenly dyed purple by Chi Pau flowers, becoming a soft highlight in a majestic natural frame. As you walk along winding mountain trails, you move from surprise to fascination as Chi Pau hills gradually appear, stretching beyond sight amid the vast mountain space and shining beneath the deep blue sky. Right beside them are floating bands of white cloud.

The Chi Pau hills may remind you of violet fields in Europe. They share the same purple tone, the same sense of endless coverage, and the same romantic, poetic feeling. But only when you set foot here, see the spectacular natural painting with your own eyes, and touch each flower with your own hands will you understand that this beauty is unique, rare, impossible to compare, and impossible to fully describe.

Chi Pau flowers: a masterpiece from nature

Chi Pau flowers are a masterpiece that nature has gifted to Ta Chi Nhu. Flower hills follow one after another, stretching toward the horizon. Together they create a scene that is both poetic and majestic, like the home of a beautiful fairy from a folktale.

Standing among the purple hills, breathing in the gentle fragrance, feeling the cool wind, and occasionally seeing herds of goats and horses grazing nearby, everything blends into a vivid scene between reality and dream. Lost in admiration of such heart-stealing beauty, people seem to forget time and space. Small thoughts and big concerns fade away; before your eyes, only the sky-wide purple of Chi Pau flowers remains.

A wonderful experience of flowers and mountains:

Alongside the beauty of Chi Pau flowers, Ta Chi Nhu is also a route of discovery and experience, where you can let your spirit drift among overlapping mountain ranges and rolling white clouds.

When Chi Pau flowers are in bloom, you can see a thin layer of dreamy mist from the foot of Ta Chi Nhu. Higher up, clouds drift across the sky, Chi Pau flowers appear here and there, and then a sea of clouds gathers. The clouds are not only overhead but also at body level, close enough that it feels like you could reach out and touch them.
