November Trek to the “Roof of Yen Bai” Through a Sea of Clouds
The roof of Yen Bai – Tà Chì Nhù – is a destination that mountain lovers and anyone drawn to a real challenge should not miss. This peak is famous as a “cloud paradise on earth,” with breathtaking scenery all around. Explore it with Tổ Ong.
Weather on the Roof of Yen Bai in November
As a highland province in northern Vietnam, Yen Bai has a climate divided clearly into four seasons: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Each season has its own beauty, but November is often considered the most beautiful time of year for the “roof of Yen Bai.” November is when Yen Bai begins to enter winter. The air turns cool, and thick clouds gather around the mountain summit. Once you reach the top, it can feel as if you only need to raise your hand to touch the clouds. Even more memorable, this is also when golden rice fields around the roof of Yen Bai leave a lasting impression. The bright yellow is vivid without being harsh, spreading across a wide and open landscape.
A Quick Look at the Terrain of the Roof of Yen Bai
Tà Chì Nhù belongs to the Pu Luông massif in the Hoàng Liên Sơn range. The peak is located in Trạm Tấu District, Yen Bai Province, at an elevation of 2,979m, ranking seventh among the ten highest mountains in Vietnam. The terrain here is complex, with many steep slopes and some sections that are almost vertical. The climate is also considered harsh, with frequent strong winds, making the climb difficult and potentially dangerous. For that reason, if you are not an experienced mountaineer, you should join a group or book a reputable trekking tour to stay safer while conquering the roof of Yen Bai.
Conquering the Roof of Yen Bai – Tà Chì Nhù Peak
Preparing before the trek
Before any trip, careful preparation helps everything go more smoothly. This is especially true for the journey to conquer the roof of Yen Bai, a high and rugged mountain.
Trekking shoes:
The first item you need for this journey is a pair of trekking shoes with strong grip soles. Choose shoes one size larger than your normal size. You should buy them from reputable outdoor or trekking footwear shops and avoid using regular running shoes. Before the trip, trim your toenails to avoid losing a nail when your toes slide forward and hit the front of the shoes on descents.
Supportive backpack:
Next, prepare a 15-20 liter supportive backpack. Choose a pack with straps that fit well across the shoulders and arms to reduce soreness. You should also bring electrolyte tablets to add to your water bottle or keep in your mouth. This small tip helps replenish minerals and reduce fatigue throughout the journey to the roof of Yen Bai.
Warm clothing:
In November, the weather in Yen Bai is cool, and nighttime temperatures can drop to around 13-14 degrees Celsius. Bring a windbreaker, jacket, and thermal layers to keep warm. Although the cold, dry weather means fewer insects and leeches, you should still prepare insect repellent. About half a month before the trek, spend time building fitness through running and especially stair climbing.
Exploring the roof of Yen Bai – Tà Chì Nhù Peak
The terrain leading to the roof of Yen Bai is not too dense, with many shortcuts and side trails, mostly following footpaths. However, the trails are quite steep and continuous; on rainy days, they become slippery and very dangerous. The scenery along the route to Tà Chì Nhù Peak is extremely beautiful, changing constantly with elevation. You will pass through old-growth forest, cross streams, move through low-canopy forest, and then reach open grasslands. Throughout the trek, the route feels engaging enough that fatigue and the urge to give up can fade into the background. The journey is usually divided into three stages. Stage 1 is around 1,200m near the foot of Mỏ Chì Mountain, where many groups stop by a forest stream for lunch. Stage 2 runs from the stream to the overnight hut at 2,400m. Stage 3 begins the next morning, from the hut to the summit.
