Putaleng – One of Vietnam’s Most Majestic Peaks
Among the top three highest mountains in Vietnam, after Fansipan and Pusilung, Putaleng is a favorite trekking destination for adventure lovers. The peak reaches 3,049 meters and is located in Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. It offers both wild and poetic scenery, with moss-covered primary forests and many streams along the route. Trekkers can easily encounter streams of different sizes throughout the journey. Temperatures near the summit stay below 15 degrees Celsius year-round, and the cold conditions are ideal for rhododendrons to thrive.

Rhododendron – The Queen of Northwest Flowers
When talking about flowers in Northwest Vietnam in general and Putaleng in particular, rhododendrons are impossible to miss. Rhododendrons are woody plants commonly found above 2,000 meters. To adapt to windy mountain slopes, they usually do not grow taller than 15 meters. In return, they have strong root systems to withstand powerful winds and wide canopies that spread like umbrellas to capture sunlight.
At first glance, rhododendrons may look thin and weathered. In the dry season, their twisted leaves and muted green can make them seem almost lifeless. In truth, life still flows strongly within the trunk. The rhododendron is simply sleeping, waiting for the right conditions to burst into color and fragrance.
Each rhododendron variety has its own beauty. Some bloom as single flowers with large, vivid petals that seem to demand attention. Others bloom in clusters, with small, delicate petals curved like bells. Their colors vary just as much: red, white, yellow, soft pink, purple, and more. Some varieties even carry two colors on the same cluster. It is one of nature’s quiet masterpieces.
Admiring the Irresistible Beauty of Rhododendrons on Putaleng
Many mountains in Northwest Vietnam have rhododendrons, but few places are as abundant and diverse as Putaleng. Along the trekking route, you can easily spot rhododendron trees scattered through the primary forest. Most are ancient trees.
In contrast to their rough trunks, delicate rhododendron flowers light up the mountainside. Purple and pink flowers cover the largest areas on Putaleng. These colors are neither too pale nor too bright, blending beautifully with mist-covered slopes. The red rhododendrons may be fewer in number, but they are the most eye-catching, glowing like small flames on the branches. There are also snow-white blooms and soft yellow flowers like sunlight.
