Detailed 2-Day, 3-Night Lao Than Trekking Itinerary
Lao Than is a trekking route suitable for beginners. Known as the “roof of Y Ty,” this mountain is one of the most beautiful cloud-hunting spots in the Northwest. Lao Than also attracts trekkers with its cool summit climate, captivating scenery, and approachable terrain. To help you fully experience Lao Than, To Ong has designed a 2-day, 1-night trekking route. Let’s take a closer look.
1. Where is Lao Than?

Cloud hunting on the roof of Y Ty – Lao Than
Lao Than is located in Phin Ho Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province, at an elevation of 2,860m. Visitors love sitting on rocky outcrops, as if casting a fishing line into the vast sea of clouds. The best time for cloud hunting is from November to May of the following year. During this period, cold air arrives and causes water vapor in the atmosphere to condense into clouds.
The area has characteristics of a subtropical monsoon climate in high mountains. The closer you get to the summit, the lower the temperature becomes. In winter, temperatures can drop to 2oC. However, because you will be moving a lot and the route has few large trees, you may still feel hot during the day.
This cloud-paradise trekking route is 16km long, passing low grass hills, gentle slopes, and sparse burnt forest. Along the way, you may see many wooden huts or small rock caves where trekkers can rest. Overall, this is a relatively gentle trekking route.
2. Journey to conquer Lao Than summit:
Day one:
On the first morning, you will gather at Phin Ho vegetable farm at the foot of Lao Than. Here, you will meet the local porters. They know the trail extremely well and help reduce the burden of your luggage. Following them, you officially begin the Lao Than trekking journey.
Today, to let your body adapt to the new environment, you do not need to hike for too long. The goal is the rest hut at 1,800m after about 5 hours of trekking. After warming up on a few gentle slopes, you cross grasslands that are lush green in spring and golden in autumn. Beyond the grassland are sparse forests. In many areas, only tree stumps remain because locals have burned land for farming. The scenery feels a little mysterious as the wind rustles through dry leaves. This section can be sunny and hot, so remember to protect yourself from the sun and drink water regularly.

By late afternoon, you will reach Hang Da, a resting place for people who work in the forest. To Ong will prepare dinner with you, including grilled meat and bamboo-tube rice. In the evening, the whole group gathers around a warm fire, sips a little táo mèo wine, and listens to porters tell stories. Nights on the mountainside are quite cold, so keep yourself warm and sleep well to prepare for the second trekking day.
Day two:
The group wakes up early to watch sunrise. The remaining route takes only about one hour to reach Lao Than summit. However, the trail is steep, with many thorny plants and strong winds that can drain your energy more quickly. This mountain is one of the rare high peaks in Vietnam with a relatively flat summit surface. From up high, Phin Ho village at the mountain’s foot looks tiny. Humans, too, feel incredibly small before the grandeur of nature. From here, you can see Ky Quan San and Nhiu Co San appearing faintly in the distance. If you choose the right day, a floating sea of clouds will leave you overwhelmed. Under the golden light of sunrise, the clouds glow and shimmer beautifully.

Taking a photo with the metal summit marker on Lao Than
Reaching Lao Than without taking a photo with the metal summit marker would be a major omission. It feels like proof that you have conquered an elevation of nearly 3,000m.
Lao Than has a reward for those who persevere until the end. It is an invisible gift, but one with immeasurable value: the joy and pride of overcoming every challenge along the journey.
3. Explore the distinctive culture of the Northwest
The journey does not end as soon as you descend the mountain. After saying goodbye to the kind porters, To Ong will take you back to Sapa to experience the distinctive culture of the highlands. First, release the fatigue of the journey by soaking in a Dao herbal bath. This bathing water is cooked from precious medicinal herbs, believed to help ease tiredness, relax muscles, and relieve colds. Next comes Northwest cuisine. A famous local hotpot is sturgeon hotpot, with the sweetness of fish, the sourness of forest bamboo shoots, and a rich, savory broth. In cold weather, hotpot and a little rice wine are hard to beat. You can also buy souvenirs at Sapa night market. Nights in the highlands are far from quiet; they are lively, with many activities. You can feel the carefully woven threads of brocade fabric, touch the rustic surfaces of handicrafts, and watch artisans play the khèn, sing, and dance. This is how the land says goodbye to you.

Goodbye Lao Than, where the sea of clouds stretches endlessly
