- Altitude: clouds often gather from 2,000m to 5,000m. With a summit at 2,860m, Lao Than is a very suitable place for cloud hunting.
- Temperature: Lao Than’s average annual temperature does not exceed 20°C. The range from 3°C to 20°C is considered suitable for clouds to gather and roll. Below 3°C, water can freeze. Above 20°C, clouds may disperse into mist.
- Humidity: the mountain lies in a high-altitude subtropical monsoon zone. In winter, the northeast monsoon brings in large amounts of moisture and rain. The rain usually does not last long. After each spell of rain comes cold wind, followed by warmer sunshine and low-level mist. These rains help make the clouds on Lao Than thicker.

The best time to hunt clouds:
You should trek Lao Than during the cold winter season. From November to March, your chances of seeing a cloud ocean are higher.
Keep your body warm:
Lao Than has a cold climate because of its elevation. In the winter months especially, temperatures can drop to 2°C and frost or snow may appear. Trekkers should prepare clothing that is warm enough while still wicking sweat well.
Trekkers should also bring light snacks so the body has enough energy to cope with the cold. Bread, chocolate, instant noodles, biscuits, and ginger candy are good options. Drinking water should be warm and stored in an insulated bottle. Avoid bringing hot milk, as it does not keep well for long and may affect digestion.
Check the weather forecast:
Check the forecast and try trekking on sunny days after rain. Dry trails and high moisture levels that help clouds form can make the journey more complete. If there is a lot of mist along the trekking route, there is a good chance of a cloud sea at the summit.
Prepare trekking support gear:
Lao Than’s terrain is mostly gentle slopes, with a total route of about 16km.
