Preparing enough gear while keeping your pack light for a mountain climb is a question many trekkers ask. To Ong will help answer those questions for your Ta Lien Son trekking trip.

Ta Lien Son is a high mountain in Northwest Vietnam. It is located in Ta Leng commune, Tam Duong district, Lai Chau province, at an elevation of 2,996m. Local people often call it Co Trau Mountain because of its imposing shape, like the sturdy companion of farmers. You will trek 11km through primary forest, following trails and gentle slopes. The destination is a lofty summit with a sweeping view of clouds and sky.

1. What should you pack for a Ta Lien Son trek?

  • Ta Lien trekking backpack:

There are many types of backpacks on the market today. Choose the right size based on the number of trekking days, in this case 2 days and 1 night. The usual standard is a roomy backpack with as many small compartments as possible, good water resistance, low weight, and comfortable carrying support.

  • Clothing:

Ta Lien Son has a cold climate, so layered clothing is very important for warmth. Multiple layers help you adjust flexibly to the conditions. For example, you can wear a thermal base layer inside and a waterproof puffer jacket outside. If it is cold, consider adding another layer in between. Note that clothing should not be too sealed off, as trapped sweat can make you more prone to catching a chill.

  • Shoes:

Trekking shoes also deserve careful attention. Choose a pair with anti-slip soles, lightweight construction, and good breathability. In addition, high socks help protect your feet from cold weather and forest insects.

  • Accessories suited to Ta Lien peak’s climate:

The Ta Lien Son area sometimes has rain, so you should prepare a compact raincoat. When the weather turns cold, you will also need a beanie, gloves, and scarf to keep warm.

  • Food and drinks:

Grilled dishes or hotpot are especially suitable on Ta Lien Son. You should also prepare snacks to replenish energy throughout the trip. Chocolate, biscuits, dry rations, instant noodles, and similar foods are great choices. In addition, bring enough drinking water and a water filter.

  • Personal first aid kit

A first aid kit helps you stay more prepared when unexpected situations happen. Trekkers should bring basic medicines and supplies such as pain relievers, fever patches, medicated oil, bandages, antiseptic, digestive enzymes, and more.

  • Technology devices:

Tech items such as phones, cameras, charging cables, power banks, batteries, and tracklogs should be kept in shockproof and waterproof bags.

  • Tent and sleeping bag:

A quality tent and sleeping bag will give you a comfortable time to rest.

  • Support tools for trekking Ta Lien Son:

Trekking poles, a map, compass, flashlight, rope, and similar tools are useful for the Ta Lien Son trek because the terrain is mountainous, forested, and includes many slopes.

2. How do you organize your Ta Lien trekking gear neatly?

First, classify your items into 4 groups: camping gear, cooking gear, clothing, and other items.

  • Bottom of the backpack: This position is for bulky and soft camping items such as a sleeping bag. Soft items create a cushion layer that helps protect other gear.
  • Middle of the backpack: This area is suitable for ingredients, cooking tools, and a mini stove.
  • Top of the backpack: This is where frequently used items should go, such as clothes, raincoat, first aid kit, and personal hygiene items.
  • Side compartments: Personal items such as tech devices (kept in shockproof, moisture-resistant bags), snacks, and water can be placed in these compartments.
  • Outside the backpack: The tent should be placed outside the backpack so you can take it out quickly if you need shelter on Ta Lien Son.
