Where is Bidoup Nui Ba?

Bidoup Nui Ba National Park is located in Lac Duong and Dam Rong districts, Lam Dong Province. It is one of the five largest national parks in Vietnam. The park is named after its two highest peaks: Bidoup Peak at 2,287m and Nui Ba Peak at 2,167m. With high mountain terrain and clearly divided landscapes, this area is home to many rare animal and plant species. It is also a diverse natural resource reserve.

With a total hiking distance of 27km, exploring the forests and mountains of Vietnam’s Central Highlands takes two days and one night. The first day is the journey to conquer the peak, followed by the descent on the second day.

Day One: Conquering Bidoup Peak

Explore primeval forest with diverse vegetation:

An ancient, mysterious primeval forest

On the first day, you will see the old-world beauty of the ancient forest with your own eyes. On sunny days, soft light filters gently through the canopy. The whole forest brightens, full of life. On chilly days, mist drapes over the trees, creating a mysterious and captivating atmosphere.

Wildflowers adding color to Bidoup

The journey through the forest will surprise you again and again with nature’s creativity. There are winding paths lined with thick grass, moss-covered tree canopies, and the bright colors of many wildflowers: the deep purple of melastoma blooms, the white of tiny clustered flowers, and the vivid pink of a precious camellia variety. From time to time, you will come across small streams with clear water where pebbles are visible below. The gentle sound of flowing water feels like a cheerful forest melody.

Ancient trees in the great forest

Bidoup Nui Ba is famous for many trees that are hundreds of years old. In particular, it is home to ancient Po Mu trees. The best-known one is around 1,300 years old, with a trunk so large it takes nine people to wrap their arms around it.This is also the only place in the world where the flattened two-needle pine grows, a species often described as a prehistoric fossil.

Wildlife in the old forest

Sometimes along the hiking trail, you may encounter wildlife from the old forest. It could be colorful birds, playful langurs, a family of wild boars, or even less friendly animals such as snakes. Whatever the species, do not approach them or feed them. That is not good for you, and it is not good for animals that live by instinct in the wild.

Conquering Bidoup Peak

The higher you climb, the thinner and colder the air becomes, as if you are entering another world. At elevations above 2,000m, temperatures can drop below 13°C. The air gives you a floating feeling, like walking among clouds. When you finally reach the summit, the fatigue of the long journey fades away, replaced by the excitement of achievement.

From the towering mountain peak, look far into the distance and take in the majesty of the forested mountains. Endless shades of green stretch all the way to the horizon. Let your soul settle and listen to leaves swaying or the wings of forest birds. That is how the spirit of the forest speaks to you.

Camping overnight in the forest

If you hike Bidoup, spending the night here is a must. The old forest is quieter at night than during the day, but not everything is asleep. The night world is still full of life. The chorus of insects, the rustle of leaves in the wind, and millions of stars overhead lull you to sleep. Returning to the most primal things, we feel like children resting peacefully in a mother’s embrace.Choose an open space and gather together beside the flickering fire. You will hear legendary stories about a land rich in history from local people. Food, music, friends, and stories come together to create a memorable night in this magical place.

Bidoup Nui Ba: The Journey Down

Watching sunrise on Bidoup Mountain

The first rays of sunrise wake the whole Bidoup Nui Ba forest, and the second day begins. Looking out toward the mountain slopes, mist floats like a curtain over the forest. Soon, as the sun rises higher, the fog lifts to reveal deep green layers below. The chilly morning air is perfect for sipping a hot cup of coffee. Suddenly, your heart feels warm, and your mind becomes lighter and calmer. Returning to nature truly is an effective way to heal the soul.

Visiting K’ho community life

The descent from Bidoup Nui Ba begins on a different route. Along the way, you will see stilt houses of the K’ho people: small wooden homes tucked into the forest. You will also visit fruit gardens and flower gardens cultivated by local people. The K’ho have lived on this land for generations. The forest gives them land and abundant resources for their livelihood, while the sincere K’ho community maintains a friendly life in harmony with nature.

Pulling a ferry across the Da Nhim River

The final challenge is crossing the Da Nhim River on a wooden ferry. It may sound intimidating, but To Ong has chosen a shallow section where the current is not too strong. The ferry operates with a system of ropes overhead. You use your own strength to move it across the river. It is sure to be a very interesting experience. At the end of the Bidoup Nui Ba hiking journey, look back at the experiences and new things you discovered along the way. There is beautiful nature that makes you love and cherish what creation has given us. There are challenges that require enthusiasm and courage to overcome. And there is the connection between complete strangers who become warmly familiar from the moment you meet.Trips to new lands become even more meaningful when shared with friends. Let To Ong be your companion as you conquer the magical land of Bidoup Nui Ba.
