When people talk about adventure travel, many immediately think of trekking. Although it is not yet widely popular across Vietnam, this type of travel has become a trend among many young people. To have a truly enjoyable trip, participants need to prepare their fitness for trekking in a structured and careful way. If you do not know where to start, this article from Tổ Ong shares simple exercises you can do before departure.

Why fitness preparation matters for trekking

Many people make the mistake of thinking that trekking is just travel, so they can go whenever they feel like it. But after just 10 to 15 minutes on the trail, muscle soreness and tired knees can quickly set in. Without resilient health, you cannot expect a successful trip. Training before trekking helps you reduce injuries, get used to high-intensity movement and allow your muscles to stretch so they are less painful at the beginning.

With good fitness, you can focus on the journey instead of worrying about sore or tired legs. You will be able to fully enjoy the mountain air, the vivid sounds of nature and the excitement inside you. For multi-day trips, participants may need to prepare their trekking fitness for several months before feeling confident enough to set off.

How long should you prepare your fitness for trekking?

You certainly cannot build strong fitness by training for only a few days before starting a trekking trip. At minimum, you should begin your physical preparation 10 days before departure. If your schedule allows, we recommend spending 1 to 2 months training for trekking continuously. However, two days before the official departure date, stop training so your body can relax and recover. When your trekking group gathers at the trailhead, warm up together so your body is ready to take on the challenge.

The most important fitness exercises for trekking

Trekking trips rarely last only 4 or 5 hours. They usually last at least 2 days, and some can extend up to a month. That is why you need solid fitness preparation for trekking to complete your trip as safely as possible.

Endurance-building exercise

By repeatedly standing up and sitting down, you train your body to generate energy over a long trekking distance. When training for trekking, wear a light backpack weighing about 3 to 5 kg. After you get used to it, gradually increase the backpack weight closer to what you will carry on your upcoming trek.

If after 4 to 5 days of trekking fitness preparation you feel soreness in your leg muscles that makes walking or moving difficult, it means you are training in the right direction. This period is valuable because it helps your leg muscles stretch and gradually adapt from their original condition. A few days of soreness can be worthwhile for a more comfortable trip.

You should only do this pre-trekking exercise for about 15 minutes per day. If you become too tired and cannot stand up after continuous practice, let your legs rest for a few minutes, then try again and beat your previous record. Stay consistent with this exercise for at least 10 days before trekking and you will notice a strong difference in your legs.

Balance exercise

Preparing your fitness for trekking helps you avoid falls when climbing mountain trails or going deep into the forest. To start, place a solid object about 5 to 10 cm high near a window. Then stand on it using the balls of your feet. In other words, rise onto your toes and balance on that solid object. Hold the window frame with your hand if the first few days feel difficult.

If you are not used to it, you can practice standing on tiptoe while holding the window frame

This tiptoe exercise puts pressure on the soles of your feet, so you may feel stiffness when you first practice. After about 3 days, that feeling should fade, so there is no need to worry too much. This trekking fitness preparation exercise requires consistent practice for 10 days, just 10 to 15 minutes per day.

Once you are used to standing on tiptoe, move on to balancing without holding onto anything. Then turn left and right to change your direction of view. This helps the muscles in the soles of your feet and ankles stretch more flexibly. After completing these pre-trekking exercises, if you trip on a rock or slip unexpectedly, you are less likely to twist your ankle or get cramps.

Stamina-building exercise

There is no better method than running regularly. This is the best fitness preparation exercise for first-time trekkers. If possible, run in the morning to improve your health more effectively. Aim to run at least 5 km per day so your leg muscles become stronger over time under training pressure. On weekends, try to gradually double or triple this distance. Training speed also matters. If you are just starting, maintain a pace of 5 to 6 km/h, then gradually increase to 9 to 10 km/h.

For the best results from trekking fitness preparation, you should also wear a backpack with a weight close to what you plan to carry on your journey. In addition, train with all three exercises in parallel so your body can adapt evenly. With good fitness, difficult climbs and challenging trails will no longer feel like major obstacles.

Build a balanced diet while training

If you focus only on training and neglect nutrition, you will not get the results you want. You may even become more tired and exhausted. To prepare your fitness for trekking effectively, remember to care for your body with a varied diet that provides essential vitamins and important minerals. Eat more meat, especially red meat, to add protein, iron and zinc. Green vegetables are also a nutritious organic food source that helps you maintain a comfortable and clear mind.

Mental strength is the final key

On a trekking trip, whether you reach the destination depends greatly on perseverance. If you give up easily, all your effort in preparing your fitness for trekking may go to waste. Instead, strong determination and readiness to face challenges create invisible strength that helps you reach the final point. To maintain a good mindset, relax your mind, get enough sleep and travel with positive companions so that when difficulties appear, your teammates can support and lift each other up.
