Most people know Fansipan as the roof of Indochina, but what is the second roof? It is Putaleng, standing 3,049m above sea level and ranked among Vietnam’s highest mountains. Challenging is the word that best describes the journey to conquer Putaleng. Join To Ong as we explore this majestic Putaleng trekking journey.

A Brief Introduction to Putaleng

Putaleng is a mountain in northern Vietnam, located in Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. In the H’mong language, its name is pronounced Pu Ta Leng. As part of the Hoang Lien Son range, the mountain has a sharp, imposing summit and steep slopes. Very few mountains still preserve such pristine primeval forests as Putaleng. Here, you may feel overwhelmed by its grand, unique, and almost otherworldly beauty.

With a difficulty level of 3, this is not a mountain for complete beginners. It is best suited to trekkers with long-distance trekking experience or experience on routes of a similar level. You should also train regularly to build the fitness needed for the climb.

The Putaleng trek takes 4 days and 3 nights to complete a 34km route. A trekking group includes 15 guests and at least 4 To Ong team members accompanying the journey. The route starts from Ho Thau, climbs to the summit, then descends toward Ta Leng so you can experience the full beauty of Putaleng.

Day 1: Sapa – Ho Thau Hut, Lai Chau

Early in the morning, you travel by transfer vehicle from Sapa to Ho Thau Village at the foot of the mountain. Here, you will meet the porters, local people who help carry part of your luggage.

Leaving the village, the group follows a small trail up the mountain. This section is about 3km long. After roughly one hour, you reach Suoi Lon, one branch of the dense stream system on Putaleng. The cold mountain weather makes the water feel even cooler. Under the shade of the forest, with the sound of flowing water nearby, the group stops for lunch.

In the early afternoon, the group continues upward. The next destination is Ho Thau Hut at 2,400m. To reach it, you pass through mountain slopes with many steep sections.

By sunset, you arrive at Ho Thau Hut. The final rays of the day cast a brilliant golden glow over the simple wooden shelter. The hut was built by local people in a sheltered spot near a stream as a resting place. The spacious area can accommodate around 50 people and is equipped with warm blankets and insulation mats. There is no electric lighting, only the faint glow of headlamps and flashlights, yet the atmosphere feels deeply warm and cozy. The group rests to prepare for the second trekking day.

Day 2: Ho Thau Hut – Putaleng Summit

The route to the summit is shorter, but steeper and more demanding. At this altitude, the trail mainly passes through bamboo forest. If you trek Putaleng in March, you may see rhododendrons in bloom. Red, yellow, pink, and purple blossoms create a colorful cloak over the deep green mountains.

After about 2 hours of trekking, you reach the majestic Putaleng summit. Take time to check in with the metal summit marker as a memory of the journey. One thing to know is that Putaleng is not an ideal cloud-hunting spot like Ky Quan San. Because the vegetation is dense, the mountain is surrounded by forest. In return, the forest here has a rare, captivating, mysterious beauty with countless fascinating plant species you may be seeing for the first time.

After enjoying time at the summit, the group returns to the hut to rest. In the early afternoon, the journey continues, this time descending toward Ta Leng. This section is easier but longer. The scenery is irresistible, with ancient forest covered in vivid green moss. In autumn, you may come across red maple trees glowing like sparks in the forest. Walking slowly through the beauty, you reach the resting hut at 1,800m by evening.

Day 3: Rest Hut – Ta Leng Commune, Sapa

Wake up early, fuel up with breakfast, and get ready to continue downhill. Because the route descends and you have already settled into the rhythm of trekking, this section feels relatively gentle.

Back in Sapa, try soaking in a Red Dao herbal bath to wash away fatigue. Dao herbal water is known locally for helping the body recover and easing muscle aches and chills.

When it comes to food, sturgeon hotpot deserves a mention. This famous Northwest specialty is something visitors should try at least once. Sturgeon live in cold, fast-flowing water, so the flesh is firm, sweet, and not greasy. On a cold late-year day, few things feel better than a hot, spicy hotpot.

In the evening, do not miss the night market in Sapa. You can browse brocade textiles, silver jewelry, handmade souvenirs, enjoy the songs and dances of the Northwest, and warm up with hot local dishes. The market’s highland cultural colors will make it hard to leave.
