The Deep Green Forests of Ta Lien Son
Of course, the first greens you cannot miss are those of the primeval forests. The forest on the Ta Lien route is often called a fairy-tale forest for both its beauty and its diversity.
Evergreen forest
Evergreen trees are species whose leaves last throughout the year and hardly change color. Their green only shifts in depth: tender and bright when new shoots appear, then gradually darker over time.
Evergreen forest makes up most of the Ta Lien Son trekking route. The canopies spread wide and dense, reaching for as much sunlight as possible. The trunks are not straight but bend and twist in different directions. Moss and lichen cling to the bark, forming strange protruding shapes.
One of the notable plants on this mountain is bamboo. It often grows along the trekking trail and near the summit area. Dense bamboo groves, with slender stems, cast cool shade over the path for travelers.
Ancient tea forest
Another shade of green on Ta Lien comes from the tea forest at elevations of 1,700 – 2,900m. These trees are hundreds of years old, carrying the quiet, contemplative presence of elders who have seen many seasons. Some tea trees rise dozens of meters high, standing like forest deities. Some have hollow trunks large enough for several people to fit inside at once. In late spring and early summer, pure white tea flowers bloom along the trail, like delicate highlights scattered across a poetic green canopy.
Maple forest
Mixed among the evergreen forest are trees that shed their leaves in autumn, such as maples. Usually, maple leaves are green too, but their green carries a cheerful hint of yellow, different from the deeper green of other species.
When autumn arrives, the leaves gradually turn yellow, then red, before falling and becoming the brown of the earth. The brilliant colors of the maple leaves look like countless sparks, lighting up the Northwest forest.

Terraced fields
There is the fresh green of terraced rice fields. Each slim rice stalk rises straight and tall, carrying hopes for a bountiful harvest. They sway whenever the wind passes, like waves at sea. After the crop season, water is guided into each field. The surface becomes like thousands of giant mirrors, reflecting the blue of the sky.
Crystal-clear streams
Ta Lien Son also has mountain streams. Cool water flows from rock crevices, clear as glass, revealing the moss-green streambed below. These streams weave through the land like lifelines, nourishing and protecting the green of the great Northwest forest.

From the summit at nearly 3,000m, when you look into the distance, you can take in the grandeur of Ta Lien Son. The mountains carry a blue-gray tone, layered one after another. Farther away, that green becomes hazier through clouds and mist, gradually blending into the blue sky.
