Bình minh mây trắng trên đỉnh Nhìu Cồ

At 2,965m, Nhiu Co San is the 9th highest peak in Vietnam, located in Sang Ma Sao commune, Bat Xat district, Lao Cai province. Nicknamed the Buffalo King of the North, Nhiu Co San has the majestic, untamed beauty of old-growth forests and endless layers of mountains. Yet beyond its rugged character, Nhiu Co San also has a poetic side that brings a deep sense of calm. In today’s article, join To Ong in exploring peaceful moments on the summit of Nhiu Co San.

White-cloud sunrise on Nhiu Co San summit:

A misty summit and a vast sea of clouds are signature scenes on high mountains, and Nhiu Co San is no exception. The view becomes especially beautiful at sunrise. From nearly 3,000m above sea level, the mountains and cloud sea unfold fully before your eyes. The sun feels gentler as it rises through the haze, casting a shimmering golden glow. The white clouds look soft and airy like whipped cream, spreading like an endless ocean across the sky. In the distance, Lao Than and Ky Quan San rise above the clouds like islands. The crisp mountain air brings a floating, weightless feeling, as if you are drifting among the clouds.

The mist-covered Nhiu Co trekking trail

When trekking Nhiu Co San after rainy days or during winter, you may find yourself immersed in fog. Low temperatures and moisture combine to create a thick veil of mist. It settles over grass hills, slips through dry branches, and clings to leaves. Dry tree trunks in all kinds of shapes rise out of the fog, creating an otherworldly scene.

Dreamy villages under peach trees

Sang Ma Sao commune sits right at the foot of Nhiu Co San. Here, you can feel the gentle, unhurried rhythm of Hmong and Dao villages. Beside simple houses and winding paths, old peach trees and mist create a romantic beauty that feels almost like a fairy tale. When the flowers bloom, their soft pink color becomes a delicate accent in the bright spring landscape.

Nhiu Co San old-growth forest covered in green moss

Thanks to its altitude, the old-growth forest on Nhiu Co San remains largely intact. Trees here do not grow straight upward; instead, they twist and bend into unusual shapes. Moss and lichen, which thrive in cold and humid forests, spread vigorously across nearby tree trunks. The whole forest sinks into a lush shade of green.

The sound of Ong Chua Waterfall

On the way to the summit, you will pass Ong Chua Waterfall. Water falls from rock walls hundreds of meters high, striking protruding stones and spreading into smaller streams that nourish the plants growing on the cliffs. The waterfall is not loud or overwhelming; it is much gentler. The sound of water trickling through the forest feels like a healing mountain melody.

The vast goat-grazing grassland

The descent leads you to a broad grassland where goats graze. There are no tall trees here, only grasses and boulders. The space feels open and expansive. Herds of goats and buffalo graze leisurely, as if nothing in the world could disturb them. From where you stand, a glance into the distance reveals mountain ranges rolling across the other side.

The glass forest of Nhiu Co in winter

One of Nhiu Co San’s winter specialties is its so-called glass forest. It gets this name because ice and snow can appear on Nhiu Co when temperatures drop. The trees across the mountain become covered in a white layer of frost and ice. The scene is so beautiful that anyone would pause to admire it.

Stopping to warm up by the fire

Perhaps the most peaceful moment is when you stop to rest, light a fire for warmth, and fill your stomach with a handful of sticky rice or a cup of tea. Everyone gathers to talk, sharing new discoveries from the trail.

Nhiu Co San is beautiful year-round. Maple leaves change color in November and December, and you can also hunt clouds from the summit. Make your way there soon to see purple and pink blossoms in full color and feel the peace of this mountain. Trek Nhiu Co San with To Ong today.
