A Beginner’s Guide to Packing for Putaleng
After learning about Putaleng and deciding to take on this adventurous trekking journey, the next thing to think about is what to prepare and how to pack properly. Let’s go through it with Tổ Ong.
Like most trekking routes, you will need the basic clothing, personal items, and essential gear. However, because Putaleng is challenging and has its own terrain characteristics, there are a few extra things to keep in mind.
Introduction to Putaleng Peak
Putaleng is a mountain peak in the Hoang Lien Son range, standing at 3,049m. It is located in Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. Thanks to this impressive elevation, Putaleng is also known as the “third roof of Indochina.”
Surrounding Putaleng is a wild primary forest filled with large ancient trees covered in moss and lichen. The closer you get to Putaleng, the more it feels like you are opening a great treasure chest of mountain nature: the rustling of birds through the canopy, the gentle sound of streams winding through rhododendron forests, and the fascinating diversity of plants and wildlife.
How to Pack for Putaleng
1/ Clothing
Essential clothes:
As Putaleng is Vietnam’s third-highest peak, temperatures drop as you climb. The summit area can be very cold, so choose clothing that keeps you warm without being too heavy or stuffy, so you can stay comfortable while trekking.

Pack breathable T-shirts to change into during the Putaleng trekking journey. For sleepwear, choose long sleeves to help avoid insect bites.
A puffer jacket or windbreaker is essential. Look for a lightweight option that still provides good warmth.
During the trek, you may sweat and feel hot. Choose clothing that absorbs moisture well and allows easy movement across different types of terrain.
Trekking shoes:
We recommend preparing at least two pairs of shoes. Bring one dedicated pair of trekking shoes with good grip and anti-slip soles for safer movement. Pack one or two pairs of thick socks to keep your feet comfortable on long walking days.

You can also bring a waterproof pair of shoes for sections where you need to cross streams.
A wool scarf to keep your neck warm and a hat for sunny weather are also important.
Essential items and accessories:
Trekking backpack: choose a trekking or travel backpack with enough space for your gear. It should have padded straps and supportive fasteners. A backpack with several small compartments will make it easier to organize, protect, and access your items when needed.

Bring basic daily personal items such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, and a face towel, as the Putaleng tour still includes rest stops where you can take care of personal hygiene.
You should carry identification documents and a small amount of cash in case needed. Keep them deep at the bottom of your backpack to avoid dropping them when taking other items out.
2/ Trekking and Camping Gear
As this is a multi-day trek, a camping tent with full accessories is essential.

A sleeping bag helps keep you warm at night, while a sleeping mat limits direct contact with the ground and reduces cold from ground moisture.
Bring a waterproof groundsheet for meals in the forest. Choose one that is water-resistant, durable, and not easy to tear.
A flashlight and rope are also very important.
Prepare a first-aid kit, basic medicine for fever, headache, diarrhea, stomachache, and any personal medication you need, along with insect protection.
3/ Food and Water
Only bring enough food and water to replenish energy along the way. Food does not need to be excessive, but it should be nutritious enough to support your health throughout the trekking journey.
4/ Before You Go
Contact your Putaleng tour guide and porters to update and reconfirm trip details, including meeting point or pickup point, guide information, and whether the weather allows departure. If the weather suddenly becomes too bad, the trip should be postponed for safety.

Note: To climb Putaleng, you need to obtain permission from the People’s Committee of Tam Duong District, Lai Chau before trekking.
