Exploring Putaleng: Is It Really as Hard as People Say?
When people talk about high mountain peaks, they often imagine rugged trails and endless steep climbs. Putaleng is no exception, rising to an impressive 3,049m. It is the third-highest mountain in Vietnam, after Fansipan and Pusilung. But if you join Tổ Ong’s Putaleng tour, is the trekking route still too difficult? Let’s find out.
1. Putaleng Peak – the third roof of Indochina:
Putaleng, or Pú Tả Lèng, meaning “Tả Lèng mountain peak” in the Dao language, is located in Tả Lèng Commune, Tam Đường District, Lai Châu Province. Standing proudly amid the dense forests of Vietnam’s Northwest, this mountain has become an emerging trekking destination for adventure lovers. Its beautiful, diverse nature and largely untouched character are what draw trekkers here.
Putaleng is considered level 3 in difficulty. With long slopes and countless turns, it is not a place for beginners to take lightly. Instead, it is a paradise for experienced trekkers with good fitness, passion, and courage.
Dense forest on Putaleng Mountain
Putaleng is known for its twisted, uniquely shaped forests and a dense network of streams. Forest covers the entire mountain, alternating between evergreen forest, bamboo forest, and maple forest. In late spring and early summer, the mountain bursts into color as rhododendron forests bloom. The higher you go, the more rhododendrons you will see. It is no exaggeration that Putaleng is known as the kingdom of rhododendrons. The cold air on the summit seems to create ideal conditions for these flowers to thrive. Trekking Putaleng, you can admire more than 30 different rhododendron species in bloom. That is why March and April are wonderful months for a Putaleng tour.

3. Putaleng trekking itinerary with Tổ Ong:
The 34km, 3-day-2-night Putaleng route promises many fascinating experiences. Trekkers ascend from the Hồ Thầu side and descend toward Tả Lèng.
-
Stage 1: Hồ Thầu Village – 2,400m rest hut
On the first day, a gentle trail and clear stream lead you up the mountain. This section has a few slopes that are not too high. However, because your body has not yet adapted, it can still take considerable energy. Walk and rest at a steady pace so your body can get used to the movement. After a few hours of trekking, you will reach Hồ Thầu hut to rest overnight.

-
Stage 2: 2,400m rest hut – Putaleng Peak – 1,800m rest hut
The second day is when you approach the summit. The route is shorter but much steeper, covered in bamboo forest. On the peak, cold winds blow continuously, and the vegetation remains extremely dense. Behind those layers of trees is the magnificent natural panorama of Putaleng. Take the chance to check in and capture that wonderful moment. After enjoying the scenery and resting, you will begin the descent. The next stop is the rest hut at 1,800m. From this point, the trail becomes easier because it is mostly downhill.
-
Stage 3: 1,800m rest hut – Tả Lèng Commune
After a night of rest, trekkers continue the journey back. A wild natural world appears, with countless tree trunks covered in green moss. If you trek in autumn, the red flashes of maple leaves will catch your eye. Before long, you will reach the foot of the mountain and complete three days immersed in nature.
Beyond the trek, you can also experience local culture through Dao herbal baths, regional specialties, and night markets in the highlands of Vietnam’s Northwest.
