1. Where is Nhiu Co San?
Nhiu Co San Mountain is located near the Vietnam-China border, in Sang Ma Sao Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province. In the Hmong language, the mountain’s name means Buffalo Horn. This may come from its distinctive shape when seen from afar: the mountain rises high on both sides and dips in a curve in the middle, resembling a pair of buffalo horns.
Nhiu Co San reaches 2,965 m, with a cold climate and rich ecosystem. Notably, the vegetation here shows subtropical and temperate characteristics, clearly changing by elevation.
The trekking route to the summit is not too long, but it is quite difficult. A route with diverse scenery
One of the things that draws travelers to Nhiu Co San is its poetic scenery. The route begins with terraced rice fields that change color by season. During harvest time, the rice turns bright gold under the sun. In the water season, locals lead water into the terraces, and the surface reflects the colors of earth and sky like mirrors.
The higher you go, the grander the space becomes. A narrow trail leads through grasslands and shrubs into dense primeval forest and deep green coniferous woodland. The majestic Ong Chua Waterfall

On clear days, forests, valleys, villages, and rice fields appear and disappear behind drifting clouds. On humid days, the whole summit is surrounded by a thick sea of clouds. The mountain also has many rhododendron trees. March and April are when the rhododendrons bloom. In temperatures below 10°C, rugged, twisted trunks feel more alive thanks to clusters of red and purple flowers.
A wide goat grazing field like a grassland
The goat grazing field will certainly delight trekkers. Here, primeval forest gives way to wild grass and shrubs covering the ground. In the final days of the year, the grass turns a faded yellow, like a western frontier landscape. Herds of goats graze leisurely, calm and unhurried.
The enchanting glass forest
Winter on Nhiu Co San is quite harsh, with average temperatures ranging from 2 – 10°C. Thick fog makes the scenery dreamlike. Mist settles and freezes into a transparent, glass-like layer on leaves. Ancient mossy tree trunks are also covered in white ice. The whole landscape sinks into the cold beauty of frozen crystals. A scene that seems to belong only in fairy tales can now be seen on Nhiu Co San Mountain.
3. When is the best time to trek Nhiu Co San?
The best time to trek Nhiu Co San is from September to April of the following year. This period is a little cold, but the weather is dry and easier for walking. Maple leaves change color in November and December, and this is also a good time for cloud hunting on the summit. January is suitable for those who want to experience a snowy winter. In March and April, rhododendrons dress the mountain in a brilliant cloak. Whether for clouds, snow, or flowers, each season is beautiful, so check carefully before trekking.
