Hiking Ta Giang and Listening for the Echo of the Chapi

Đàn Chapi của người đồng bào Raglai

If one day you suddenly want a special trip, a journey back to nature that feels relaxed, gentle, and not too exhausting, then look for a Ta Giang hiking tour. Ta Giang is a land of green grasslands like open steppe, and it is also the place that inspired musician Tran Tien to sing of going to the mountains to hear the Chapi.

A Brief Introduction to Ta Giang

Ta Giang lies deep inside Thanh Son Commune, Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province. Its landscape is mainly made up of wide grasslands like valleys surrounded by mountains, with small streams and sparse forest woven throughout. About 70km from Cam Ranh City, it is also home to the Raglai community and the sound of the Chapi.

The Ancient Sound of the Chapi

Culture at each destination is one of the things that gives a trip its charm. Every local story helps you understand more about the natural life of that place. The Ta Giang hiking route is closely connected to the ancient Chapi instrument of the Raglai people. The Chapi is a traditional instrument long used by the Raglai people. It is made from old bamboo and has eight strings. The instrument is modeled after Roman-style tuning and is commonly used in Raglai festivals such as the grave-leaving ceremony, filial piety ceremony, and new rice celebration. In the past, almost every household had a Chapi to play while going to the fields or mountains, easing sadness, or joining festivals.

Chapi songs often have very simple names. Influenced by the distinctive musical character of the Raglai people, the sound of the instrument is mostly inspired by nature: flowing water, murmuring streams, birdsong, forest wind, rustling leaves. Melodies are passed orally from generation to generation, without written notation like music in many other places.

Perhaps that is why the sound of the Chapi so easily evokes the image of a rustic, gentle natural landscape. Its tones tremble fast and slow, low and high, filled with the warmth of the Raglai people.

The Ta Giang Tour and…

Gentle rocky streams

Ta Giang carries the blended beauty of green forest, cool streams, open wind, and swaying grass. It is both wild and poetic. This is the starting point of the fascinating Ta Giang tour. To reach the place known as the green grassland, you hike a 10km route through Raglai farms, forests, and refreshing rocky streams.

Large and small streams flow through the old forest, wrapped by the vast mountains. The water running over stone slabs sounds like forest music. That sound also feels like the Chapi echoing somewhere nearby. Sitting there, listening to the stream and watching fish swim through emerald-clear water, is already a beautiful pleasure.

Along the rocky stream are pebble banks of many sizes. They lead you through primeval forest and past tall, lush grass fields. You may suddenly remember a few Raglai epics once heard in stories. You feel as if you can hear the rising and falling notes of a Chapi being played. Close your eyes and you can imagine a vast, majestic scene of green forest and cool streams, full of natural poetry.

A Chapi melody on the grassland

The stopping point of the Ta Giang tour is a wide grassland like a valley. When you reach the campsite, the fresh green stretching out before your eyes can feel overwhelming: the green of grass, of layered mountains in the distance, and of a clear sky touched by soft white clouds. Everything carries you away from the noise of the city and into an irresistibly beautiful grassland.

Then it begins: lighting a fire, grilling BBQ, and relaxing under the open sky. Breathe in fresh air scented with grass. If late-night Ta Giang is a quiet Chapi melody beneath the Milky Way, then early morning is the fresh music of forests and grass still soaked in dew, waiting to greet the warm sun.

Experiences far from the city

Hiking Ta Giang does not take you along an overly complex, difficult, or steep mountain route. It is slow, gentle, and peaceful like the sound of the Chapi. The 10km Ta Giang hiking tour with To Ong brings cool forest trails, time in clear streams, camping in a lush green grassland surrounded by wide mountains, rustic meals, and sunrise with a cup of hot tea.
