Trekking Northwest Vietnam’s Spring Forests in Full Bloom
March has arrived, and the mountain forests are changing into a new coat. Spring weaves a colorful floral garment over the deep green old-growth forest. Lao Than – A dreamy trekking route:
Every spring, trekkers from near and far eagerly head to Lao Than. This mountain is 2,860m high and located in Phin Ho Village, Y Ty Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province. The mountain has a dreamy, mystical beauty, like an oil painting, with pink peach blossoms at its foot. Families grow peach trees everywhere, from gardens to high hillsides, all immersed in shades of pink. The peaches here are known as mossy peaches because they grow in cold weather, with moss clinging to their branches and leaves, creating a rare mysterious beauty. Although the lively Tet days have passed this year, the Phin Ho peach blossom season is still in color. Early March is the peak blooming period, a moment trekkers should not miss.
Beyond peach blossoms, mustard flower fields are also stunning check-in spots for photo lovers. Their bright yellow color adds a cheerful touch to the dreamy green of the mountains.
Ky Quan San – Exploring where earth meets sky
Any list of famous Northwest trekking routes would be incomplete without Ky Quan San. This mountain forms the natural boundary between Lai Chau and Lao Cai. At 3,046m, it is the fourth-highest mountain in Vietnam. White clouds cover the trail, making you feel as if you are walking through layers of cloud. The trekking route has many steep slopes and exposed rocky sections, challenging both the physical strength and spirit of trekkers.
Flowers on Ky Quan San are also diverse. Bauhinia, peach blossoms, plum blossoms, and red silk-cotton flowers bloom together at the beginning of the year. Trekkers can also see rhododendrons opening here, with yellow and red flowers dominating the landscape.
Nhiu Co San – Trekking the towering Buffalo Horn peak
In Sang Ma Sao Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province, Nhiu Co San rises proudly. At 2,965m, it is the ninth-highest peak in Vietnam and a favorite trekking destination for many young travelers.
When spring arrives, Nhiu Co San becomes a romantic and fresh painting with the soft pink of peach blossoms and the pure white of plum flowers. They bloom in home gardens, along village roads, and beside terraced rice fields.
The rhododendrons here are beautiful as well. Some deep red blossoms look like little flames hanging from the branches, while their subtle fragrance drifts through the forest.
Ta Lien Son – A fairy-tale forest in the wilderness
Ta Lien Son Peak, also known as Co Trau Mountain, belongs to Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. This mountain rises 2,996m above sea level and is famous for its rich fairy-tale forests.
In particular, trekkers here will be amazed by a white tea forest as pale as snow. These tea trees can reach tens of meters in height. Spring is also their blooming season. Tiny white petals gently fall to the ground whenever the wind passes through.
In addition, the flat summit area is home to rhododendrons. There, the flowers bloom in a romantic purple haze amid the mist.
Putaleng – Paradise of the Northwest flower queen
Putaleng is Vietnam’s third-highest mountain, reaching 3,996m. This trekking route is located in Ho Thau Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province. It is known as the “Kingdom of Rhododendrons” because it is home to up to 30 different flower varieties, distinguished by color.
Below 2,000m, yellow and red rhododendrons cover large areas. The higher you go, the lower the temperature becomes, and pink and purple flowers appear more often. Trekkers may even encounter rhododendrons with orange and purple flowers on the same cluster.
The spring picture of Northwest Vietnam does not stop there. Many unnamed flowers are also blooming, adding more beauty to the region.
