The natural boundary between Lao Cai and Lai Chau is Ky Quan San, a 3,046m mountain. It is a majestic, wild peak and a popular cloud-hunting destination. Enjoy the natural beauty captured in these photos by To Ong along the Ky Quan San trekking route.

1. A brief look at the Ky Quan San trekking route:

You can trek from the Lai Chau side or the Lao Cai side. The Lao Cai approach has less complicated terrain and is easier to follow. To conquer the mountain, trekkers need 3 days and 4 nights on a 26km route starting from Sang Ma Sao Commune, Bat Xat District, Lao Cai Province. The weather is quite cold, and the terrain includes many steep rocky slopes. This mountain is best suited to adventurous trekkers with trekking experience.

2. A trekking route with diverse natural landscapes

Ky Quan San offers many beautiful and distinctive scenes. At the start of the journey, you will see terraced fields cultivated by local people. During the water-pouring season, each flooded terrace reflects the colors of sky, earth, and plants like a living painting. In early autumn, the rich fragrance and golden color of ripe rice signal a plentiful harvest.

Farther along, mysterious forests welcome you. These are lush green bonsai forests, green not only with leaves but also with moss. Large roots block parts of the trail, and the scenery feels like something from a fairy tale. From time to time, you may see red maple trees during the leaf-changing season. They look like bright flames, drawing the attention of every traveler.

At higher elevations, layers of mountains appear and disappear in distant clouds. Ky Quan San as a whole is like a painting made of many colors: the blue of the sky, the green of the forest, the gray-green of steep rock faces, and the faint yellow of withered grass.

3. The majestic dinosaur ridge:

If you trek on a clear day, you may be stunned by the sight of white clouds curling around the mountains. Walking along the ridge, with steep slopes and deep valleys on both sides, is a challenge for brave hearts.

The suitable time to trek Ky Quan San is from September to April of the following year. During this period, high humidity combined with cold weather makes clouds more likely to form. With some luck, you may see an endless white sea of clouds.

5. Sunset at the Muoi Mountain campsite:

On Muoi Mountain at 2,100m, a simple wooden hut is where you stop to rest. It is also one of the best places to watch sunset. In the haze of kitchen smoke, gentle rays of sunlight fall through the chill, creating an unexpectedly peaceful feeling.
