Essential Gear for Trekking Putaleng
Putaleng, a proud mountain rising into the blue sky, is a trekking destination that has only become widely known in recent years. As Vietnam’s third-highest peak, it feels made for adventurous souls who love a real challenge. So how should you prepare for a journey to the summit of Putaleng? Let Tổ Ong share a few tips.
1. Key features of Putaleng:
Putaleng reaches 3,049m and is located in Ta Leng Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province.
The best time to trek Putaleng is during the dry season, when there is less rain. March and April are when rhododendrons, often called the “queen of the Northwest,” bloom in full color. The forest is filled with brilliant flowers. Yellow and deep pink blossoms stand out most because they are large and grow in abundance, while the white blooms feel a little more modest and delicate. Even the forest floor is covered in fallen rhododendron petals like a soft carpet.
The final months of the year are ideal for cloud hunting. From the third roof of Indochina, you can take in a magnificent sunrise over a floating sea of clouds.

2. Essential gear:
Personal documents:
Wherever you travel, personal documents are extremely important. Keep them in waterproof pouches and give them a separate compartment in your bag. This helps protect them from the elements and reduces the chance of losing them when you are constantly taking items in and out.
Backpack / bags:
A backpack is an essential companion for any trekker heading to Putaleng. Choose one made from lightweight, durable, water-resistant material. The size and number of compartments depend on your needs. You should also bring a smaller daypack so you can leave part of your luggage at the shelter around 2,400m. On the section from the shelter to the summit, this smaller bag should carry essentials such as food, water, and warm layers.

Trekking clothing:
Your body will sweat a lot during long periods of movement, so a moisture-wicking T-shirt is very useful. At higher elevations, wind can make you feel colder when your clothes are damp with sweat. Prepare a windbreaker to wear as an outer layer. Your pants should also be comfortable and stretchy enough for easy movement across different terrain.
The higher you go on the Putaleng trekking route, the colder it becomes. It is especially cold at night and in the early morning. Do not forget a warm jacket, hat, scarf, gloves, and socks.
Trekking footwear:
Bring two pairs: proper trekking shoes and a comfortable pair of sandals. The sandals are useful at the shelters, while the trekking shoes will stay with you throughout the journey. Good mountain shoes should be lightweight, well-fitted, grippy, and water-resistant. Putaleng has many streams, so waterproof shoes are especially important.

Personal items:
A Putaleng trek lasts several days, and conditions in the mountains are very different from the lowlands. Bring personal items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, and shower gel. Adjust quantities based on the number of trekking days. For liquids and creams, decant them into smaller bottles to save space.
Electronics:
Although there is no electricity on the mountain, that does not mean you should leave all electronics at home. Your phone is important, and you can download track logs for route reference. The beautiful scenery of the Northwest also deserves a camera. Bring your devices, but make sure you have a power bank.
Food and drinks:
You cannot complete a multi-day Putaleng trek without food and water. Besides meals prepared at the shelters, snacks are also very important. Dry rations, biscuits, chocolate, and ginger candy help provide energy and are easy to store. You also need more than 2 liters of drinking water per day because heavy physical activity can quickly exhaust you. If the weather is cold, bring cocoa or warm tea in an insulated bottle to help keep your body warm.

Personal first-aid kit:
Trekking always comes with the risk of injury from falls or illness when the body cannot adapt quickly to changing weather. Prepare basic items such as pain relievers, fever reducers, bandages, massage oil or spray, and insect repellent. These items help you stay more prepared for unexpected situations.

Trekking tools:
Putaleng has many tricky junctions and rugged sections. Navigation tools such as a compass, track log, and map are very useful for your trip. Group members should also prepare walkie-talkies to avoid losing contact with teammates. Do not forget survival tools such as a small knife, rope, fire starter, and water filter. At some point, you may need them.
These are Tổ Ong’s experience-based suggestions for packing for a Putaleng trek. Do not bring too many unnecessary items, as they will make the journey harder. At the same time, do not be careless and underpack; always have backups. To make your Putaleng trek feel truly meaningful, you can choose to join a tour with Tổ Ong.
