Packing Tips for a Lao Than Trekking Tour

Packing for a Lao Than trek
Today, Tổ Ong will help you make a list of what to bring when trekking Lao Than. Your travel bag depends heavily on the characteristics of the destination. Trekking gear for a tropical region differs from gear for a temperate region, and it also depends on each person’s needs. At the same time, we cannot bring everything as if we were staying at home. That is why you need to think carefully about what is truly necessary.
Lao Than is known as the “roof of Y Ty” at 2,860m. It is a favorite cloud-hunting destination among adventure travelers. In the cold weather at the end of the year, Lao Than appears dreamlike amid rolling cotton-like clouds. To conquer this roof, you need at least 2 days and 1 night for the 16km route. To make the trip complete, you will need to bring many things. But if you arrange them smartly, everything can fit into a single backpack.
1. Make a list of essential items
First, trekkers should list the items they need for Lao Than.
Backpack:
Backpacks come in many types, so trekkers should choose one based on the number of trekking days and the amount of gear they need to carry. A suitable backpack should be spacious, water-resistant, lightweight, padded at the shoulders, and designed with useful compartments.
Clothing:
Lao Than is a high mountain area with cold weather and strong wind at night and in the early morning. However, daytime sun can be harsh. You should bring layered clothing that keeps you warm. Because you will be moving a lot, avoid outfits that are too sealed and do not let sweat escape, as this can make you more likely to catch a chill. Suitable clothing includes two layers. The first is a thermal layer that absorbs sweat well and sits directly against the body. The second is an outer jacket, ideally with a hood, made from polyester with windproof and water-resistant properties. Depending on how cold it is, you can consider wearing an additional middle layer, such as wool or fleece. By dressing in layers, you can adjust flexibly to the environment.

Shoes:
A lightweight, water-resistant pair of trekking shoes is suitable for long journeys. Socks should be breathable and good at absorbing sweat. To keep your feet warm, consider wool socks.

Accessories:
To adapt more easily to changing weather, bring suitable accessories. The Lao Than area sometimes has rain, so you should prepare a compact raincoat. When the weather turns cold, you may also need a hat and gloves to stay warm.
Food and drinks:
These are essential when trekking Lao Than. Besides fresh food for grilling when you camp, you should prepare snacks to add energy while moving. Options include chocolate, biscuits, compressed food, instant noodles, dried fruit, and energy drinks. Bring enough drinking water based on your trekking time.
Personal first-aid kit
Trekking journeys always carry the possibility of unexpected issues. To be more proactive, prepare a first-aid kit. It can include a few basic items such as pain relievers, fever-reducing patches, medicated oil, medical gauze and bandages, antiseptic, insect-bite treatment, digestive medicine, and more.
Technology devices:
Bring only a few essentials such as your phone, camera, earphones, charging cables, power bank, batteries, and tracklog device. These items should be kept in a shockproof and waterproof pouch.
Tent and sleeping bag:
You need 2 days and 1 night to conquer Lao Than Peak, and you surely will not want to miss the chance to hunt clouds at sunrise. Bring a quality tent and sleeping bag so you can rest comfortably.
Trekking support tools:
You will also need tools to support the Lao Than trek, such as trekking poles, a map, compass, flashlight, rope, and more.
2. How to arrange items in your backpack
Now that you have a packing list, you may be wondering how to carry all of it. Let’s pack with Tổ Ong. First, take everything out and lay it on the floor. Then sort similar items into groups. You will usually have about four groups: camping gear, cooking gear, clothing, and other personal items.

Sorting and arranging items in a backpack
- The bottom of the backpack is suitable for bulky, soft camping items such as a sleeping bag. Placing soft items here creates a cushion for the other gear in your pack.
- The middle of the backpack is suitable for cooking items such as ingredients, cooking tools, and a mini stove. Fresh food should be stored in sealed containers to prevent smells from spreading through your backpack.
- The top of the backpack is for bulky items that you need to use often, such as clothing, a raincoat, first-aid items, and personal hygiene products.
- Side and secondary compartments are used for personal items such as technology devices, kept in shockproof and moisture-resistant pouches, snacks, and drinking water. Depending on the backpack model, these compartments vary in position, shape, and size, allowing trekkers to pack flexibly.
- Finally, the tent should be placed outside the backpack so it can be taken out quickly if rain suddenly arrives.
